Have you ever sat down to stream media from your Fire Stick TV and suddenly, the volume button is not working? You try changing the batteries and moving objects out of the way, but nothing works.
However, there are many other reasons your Fire Stick remote volume button may not be working. Similarly to when my Firestick wasn’t turning on, I had to troubleshoot by changing batteries or doing a simple reset.
If you go to use your Fire Stick TV remote and discover that the volume is not working, first check the batteries. If you replace the batteries and their volume still is not working on your remote, consider checking the area for physical obstructions to the connection, reset the TV and Fire Stick, and ensure you have proper audio and HDMI connection.
The reason your Fire Stick TV volume is likely due to a variety of reasons, the most popular ones being issues with the battery, connection issues, or incorrect audio or HDMI settings.
If you have attempted to correct these issues, consider using the Amazon Alexa feature as a way to control the volume.
What Causes Fire Stick Remote Volume Problems?
It should first be noted that not all Fire Stick remotes have volume controls. If you have an older model Fire Stick TV, your remote control will not have volume buttons. In this instance, use your general TV remote to adjust the volume.
The reason that your Fire Stick remote may not be working can be due to a variety of reasons, the most popular ones being:
- Issues with the batteries
- Incorrect audio settings are selected
- Incorrect HDMI port is being used
- Physical barriers in front of the TV, preventing signal connection
In addition to these main issues that could be causing your Fire Stick volume button to not be working, there are plenty of other solutions that could fix the issue. This article will offer a variety of suggestions that will assist you in getting the volume button on your Fire Stick remote to work if it is not already.
How to Get the Volume to Work on Your Fire Stick Remote?
1. Check/Replace Remote Batteries
If you find that the volume button on your Fire Stick remote is not working, your first step should be to check the batteries in the remote and replace them if necessary.
Sometimes, batteries get out of position in the remote which could cause a disruption in the connection, ultimately leading the remote to stop functioning. It is also possible that the batteries are low or dead entirely, which would prohibit the volume button—or any button—from working.
Before you go and replace the batteries for good, first take them out. Before you put them back in, wait 15-20 seconds. If this does not solve the issue, it is obvious that the batteries are in fact dead. In this instance, replace the batteries and enjoy your regularly scheduled content.
2. Reconnect your Fire Stick
Another reason your Fire Stick remote may not be working is that it is not connected to the Fire Stick system. In this case, you will have to reconnect the Fire Stick remote.
You will know the Fire Stick remote is attempting to connect when you press and hold the home button for 10 seconds or you begin to see the light flash on top of your remote.
Once the light is blinking, the remote attempts to connect. Once the connection is successful, you will receive a message on the screen notifying you of the connection, or the remote will flash blue three times.
3. Power Cycle the TV/Fire Stick
Your Fire Stick or TV may need to run through a power cycle. A power cycle of the TV or Fire Stick involves turning the technology off for about 60 seconds and starting it back up again. This off-time normally gives the software the time it needs to address basic issues, such as volume.
To give the Fire Stick the time to run through a power cycle, unplug the adapter from your TV and wait for 10 seconds before plugging it back in.
4. Check for Signal Obstructions
If the volume button on your Fire Stick TV remote is not working, ensure that there is nothing blocking the connection before you begin to seek other solutions. If there are physical barriers that disrupt the connection between the Fire Stick remote and the Fire Stick system, the volume button will not work properly.
If there are any physical objects in the way of your Fire Stick remote and the Fire Stick system, move them out of the way and retry to use the volume button.
5. Set Your TV’s IR Profile/Infrared Frequency
The volume of your TV is controlled by the IR Profile. If your volume is not working:
- Go to Settings
- Go to Equipment Controls
- Go to Manage Equipment
- Go to TV
- Go to Infrared Options
- Go to Change IR Profile
- Go to Find IR Profile
If this does not work, follow steps 1-4, and then select Change TV. It will give you further instructions to set the IR profile, which should correct the issues with the volume.
6. Ensure Proper HDMI Connection
If your volume is not working on your Fire Stick TV, ensure that the HDMI is connected properly. Ensure that you are using the HDMI-CEC port on your TV, since this port gives the Fire Stick access to adjust the volume.
Note that you may ensure the connection is established manually. To do this, from the Home screen, go to Settings and select Action Menu.
7. Unpair and Re-pair the Remote and Other Bluetooth devices
If you cannot utilize the volume buttons on your Fire Stick remote, unpair and repair the remote. To re-connect your remote to your Fire Stick device:
- At the same time, press and hold the Home button and the Back button. This will unpair and clear the device from the Fire Stick system
- To repair, press the Home button for 10 seconds
- This should reconnect the remote to the Fire Stick TV
8. Change Equipment Settings
If your volume button is not working, you should check the equipment settings and change them if necessary.
You will want to make sure that the correct TV brand is selected. If another TV is connected, it would possibly lead the volume button to not work.
To change your equipment settings, follow these steps:
- Go to Settings
- Scroll to the right and select Equipment Control
- Select TV
- You will be asked to select the brand of TV you have
- Select the correct TV
- Press the power button on the remote to turn the TV off
- Wait 10 seconds before turning the TV back on
- Answer the questions on screen
- Attempt to use the volume
- Answer the questions on screen
If this does not work right away, try it a few more times. Check out this video for detailed instructions on how to complete this process.
9. Restart/Reset the Fire Stick to factory settings
If your volume button is not working on your Fire Stick remote, you can reset the Fire Stick remote to its default factory settings.
If you decide to do this, follow these simple steps:
- Press the home Button on the remote
- Select the button for settings
- Select My Fire TV
- Select Reset to Factory Defaults
- Click Reset when the message appears on the screen
If you don’t have a remote, you can also reset your Firestick without a remote.
10. Soft reset your TV
If the volume is not working on your Fire Stick remote, another approach to correcting it may be to conduct a soft reset of your TV. To do this:
- Unplug your TV from the power source
- Wait for 60 seconds
- Plug your TV back in
A soft reset can address common issues with TVs; it means to turn the device off, and back on, to give it a short time to reset and correct any connectivity issues it may be having.
11. Use the Fire Stick Remote App
Use the Fire Stick Remote app to control the volume if the buttons on the remote are not working. This app will give you the ability to use your mobile device like a TV remote. This will allow you to adjust the volume settings on your Fire Stick system. To install the Fire Stick remote app:
- Connect the mobile device to the same Wi-Fi network as the Fire Stick System
- Open the application on your mobile device
- Select the mobile device network on your TV screen
- Using the navigation on your mobile screen, proceed to use your mobile device as a remote
12. Use Alexa
Amazon Alexa is a feature that can easily adjust the volume settings. If you have a remote with the Alexa Voice feature, simply press the button and give Alexa the directions for adjusting the volume.
Keep in mind that some older versions of the Fire Stick remote do not have the Alexa feature, so this may not be a viable option for all.
13. Turn off Dolby Digital Plus
Dolby Digital Plus is a setting built into the Fire Stick system. This feature is a setting that controls the volume of apps, making them sound louder or quieter than they normally would. If this setting is on, simply turn it off by going on your Fire Stick device and selecting:
- Settings
- Display and Sounds
- Audio
- Dolby Digital Output
- Dolby Digital Plus Off
14. Use another remote/or the old remote
If you have another available Fire Stick remote, greatly consider using that. Additionally, if you have a Fire Stick remote that is an older model without the volume buttons, you are already used to using the TV remote.
In any other instances, your normal TV remote can be used as a way to control the volume. Additionally, you can follow the steps above to pair another Fire Stick TV remote to your device.
